More than $440,000 has been raised locally toward the new public library and the Kodiak Public Library Association (KPLA) is excited to announce that early site work has begun! We are extremely grateful to the donors who have brought us to this point. Their gifts show the wonderful support we have in our community for this new gathering place. Clearing of the new library site began this morning. “Throughout our multi-year planning process, the community has been clear that it values the spruce trees on top of Borough Hill,” said Building Committee Chairman Paul Converse. “We’ve taken great care to identify the sound and unsound trees, and we will work to protect those trees that are most viable. In the coming weeks, however, many trees will be removed to create space for the new Kodiak Public Library. We will ensure that our landscaping plan includes the replanting of spruce trees, and honor the community’s fondness for the library-site trees by integrating Arbor Day with our site celebration.” A Celebration and Groundbreaking Ceremony at the site of the new library is planned for Saturday, May 19th at 2:00 at the Barn Site in observance of Arbor Day. We’ve invited other community non-profits to join us in the celebration. “We are so pleased that the Barn Site will be re-integrated into our community’s center,” said Baranov Museum Director Katie Oliver. “And as the repository of the community’s precious Alaskana collection, the library is such an appropriate neighbor for an important historical building.” So be ready for a full-blown celebratory atmosphere with delicious treats, pinwheels, photo-booth opportunities, craft tables, face painting and more! Site Celebration & Groundbreaking Ceremony Saturday, May 19th from 2:00-4:00pm. Ceremony will start at 2:00 at the Barn Site, across from the Borough Buildings followed by food, interactive events and crafts, which will take place in the High School Commons directly after the Ceremony.
